Adrien Brody sends a message with his artwork.
Adrien Brody has appeared in more than 30 films after winning the Oscar in 2002 for The Pianist, so you’ll have to excuse him for not wanting to talk about acting. These days, Brody is more focused on his artwork.
The 42-year-old Queens, New York, native heads to Art Basel this year to debut his painting series titled Hotdogs, Hamburgers and Handguns at Lulu Laboritorium, owned by Brody’s mentor, artist Domingo Zapata on December 02, 2015.
Interview with Brody before the show:
Can you explain the series?
It’s an exploration of how, in our culture, we gravitate toward instant gratification. That guns are as commonplace as fast food. There’s a parallel between the way we reach for a hamburger to solve our hunger pangs and reach for a handgun to solve greater issues. I also want to delve into the conflicting messages that we receive as a young age, especially as boys, to play with guns.
When did you first decide to undertake this project?
Overall, it started in a much lighter capacity. I was painting last year with my good friend Domingo in Mallorca, and he has this long series related to Spanish culture on matadors that is really beautiful, poetic imagery. When I thought about American culture, the first thing that popped into my head was a hamburger! That was funny to me and very much a part of my upbringing. The meditation began.
How do you enjoy painting as opposed to acting?
I love it. The beauty of painting is you have such creative autonomy and your ideas can evolve at your own pace. I love the purity of the connection between brush and canvas. It’s fulfilling and gratifying in the way that acting, for instance, is not. Better put, I should say painting affords me more freedom than acting. It’s not something I have to focus on like a job — it’s my release.
What do you want attendees to know about the exhibit?
I don’t need to reference all the horrific, current stuff happening, but there’s a plethora of violence in music, cartoons, cinema, video games. We’re also bombarded with the ever-presence of fast-food marketing. Even though most of us are pretty aware of the benefits of a healthy, well balanced diet, when we’re running around busy, sometimes we’ll grab the cheeseburger and fries. I’m conscious of all that, and guilty of all that. That conflict is a big part of this. I just hope people can respond and see both the humor and tragedy that I’m expressing.
In your vast résumé you really haven’t played too many gun-toting baddies. Was that a conscious decision?
I’m a huge pacifist, but I don’t feel this exhibit is a reflection on the parts I’ve taken. Roles that resonate with me are ones that take the character on a journey. If he’s flawed, sometimes that’s more enticing.

¿Puede explicar su obra?
Es una exploración de cómo en nuestra cultura gravitamos hacia la gratificación instantánea. Trata acerca de cómo las armas ahora son tan comunes como la comida rápida. Hay un paralelismo entre la forma en que lleguemos a por una hamburguesa para resolver con nuestros dolores el hambre que sentimos y tener una pistola para resolver grandes problemas. También quiero profundizar en los mensajes contradictorios que recibimos a una edad temprana, especialmente en los niños, es decir al jugar con armas de fuego.
¿Cuándo decidió emprender este proyecto?
En general, se inició con una capacidad ligera. Estaba pintando el año pasado con mi buen amigo Domingo Zapata, en Mallorca, que tiene esta larga tradición relacionada con la cultura española, con los matadores que es realmente hermoso, observé imágenes poéticas, quería relacionarlo, y cuando pensé en la cultura estadounidense, lo primero que me vino a la cabeza fue una hamburguesa! Eso fue divertido para mí y una parte muy importante de mi educación. Desde ahí la meditación comenzó.
¿Cómo disfrutar de la pintura en lugar de actuar?
Lo amo. La belleza de la pintura es que tienes esa autonomía creativa y tus ideas pueden evolucionar a su propio ritmo. Me encanta la pureza de la conexión entre el pincel y lienzo, es satisfactorio y gratificante, y a veces al actuar, por ejemplo, no lo es. Mejor dicho, debería decir que la pintura me permite más libertad de actuar. No es algo que tengo que centrarme como un trabajo, es mi liberación.
¿Qué quieres que los asistentes aprendan sobre tu exposición?
No necesito hacer referencia a todas las cosas horribles que actualmente suceden, pero hay una gran cantidad de violencia en la música, dibujos animados, cine, videojuegos. También estamos bombardeados con la siempre presencia de la comercialización de comida rápida. A pesar de que la mayoría de nosotros estamos muy conscientes de los beneficios de una dieta saludable y bien balanceada, cuando estamos corriendo ocupados, a veces nos agarraremos de una hamburguesa con queso y papas fritas. Soy consciente de todo eso, y culpable de todo eso. Ese conflicto es una parte importante de esto. Sólo espero que la gente puede responder y ver tanto el humor y la tragedia que estoy expresando.
En tu vasto currículum en el que realmente no has jugado demasiados roles de malos armados hasta los dientes. ¿Fue esta una decisión consciente?
Soy un gran pacifista, pero no siento que esta exposición es una reflexión sobre las piezas que he puesto. Los roles que resuenan conmigo son los que me han hecho tener una especie de viajes. Y en algunos casos, si algo está defectuoso, a veces eso es más atractivo.

Adrien Brody, Lorraine Bracco Cast on Andrew Clay’s “Dice” Showtime Sitcom.
Actor Adrien Brody and Lorraine Bracco have both signed on to guest star on Andrew Clay‘s new Showtime sitcom “Dice”.
Brody will guest star in one episode playing himself, while Bracco will appear in two episodes as Toni, a Vegas overlord who owns Clay’s gambling debts.
Sean Furst, Bryan Furst, Bruce Rubenstein, Clay and Armstrong serve as executive producers. Fox21 Television Studios is producing, with production to begin this month for a premiere in 2016.
